Coronavirus-Protection

05 Jun Flying During the Pandemic

What You Need to Know Before Flying During the Pandemic

Travelers are returning to the airways. TSA reported it screened nearly twice as many passengers over the last weekend in May versus the first weekend of the same month. Some airlines are planning to increase capacity for their June schedule. That’s the good news according to a recent analysis of the airline industry.

If you’re planning to travel by air then it’s time to double-check your awareness of, and preparation for, the latest air travel changes and challenges implemented to minimize exposure to coronavirus.

My colleagues and I travel hundreds of thousands of air miles every year. It’s an essential part of our work in the travel risk management and crisis response industry. The following are a few tips and tricks you should know before you lift off on your next flight.

Air: Some travelers wonder if the air on a jet makes it easier, or harder, for COVID-19 to spread. The CDC reports most viruses are not easily spread on flights because of how airplanes circulate and filter the air. Air is circulated up to 6 times per hour and processed through HEPA filters which remove 99.97 percent of particles passing through them.

Jet Hygiene: Airlines are increasing their hygiene protocols to ensure onboard transmissions remain low. Some airlines are using UVC lights to clean surfaces. As an added precaution, you’ll want to bring your own supply of disinfecting wipes to wipe down tray tables, seat arms, windows and walls.

Queues: The greater risk of COVID-19 exposure comes from passing time in ticket lines, security queues, departure gates, jetways, and passenger seats—each of which potentially put you in close proximity with other people and frequently touched surfaces. Streamline your queue time by having all the necessary documents and information at the ready.

Onboard Seating: Physical distancing is tough in a confined space like an airplane. Most airlines have made the middle seat unavailable to help maintain social distancing.

Mask On: Keeping your face properly masked and covered at all times, except when TSA agents need to confirm you identify, is the safest option. Most major U.S. airlines require passengers to wear a face mask or face covering during their flight. It is strictly enforced at boarding and passengers are reminded and encouraged to wear them during the flight.

Double Check: Travelers need to call ahead to get the most up-to-date information, and check for updates regularly. Changes in flight schedules, travel restrictions, airline recommendations and rules—and how they are being enforced—can occur frequently. Your entire trip could be ruined by relying on old and incorrect details, and you may not be allowed to board the plane if you aren’t able to comply with the rules.

Testing: Currently, Dubai-based airline Emirates is conducting on-site rapid tests of passengers for the virus and Austria’s Vienna International Airport has started offering the tests for arriving passengers as well as other customers who want one. Experts suggest this could be the new normal for airlines going forward.

Track and Trace: You may be asked a few questions while making a reservation or during check-in, including: Have you traveled out of the country in the last 14 days? Have you been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for coronavirus? Have you had any of the following symptoms: fever, dry cough, or difficulty breathing?

Signage: Most airports have placed markers in areas where line-ups occur to reinforce physical distancing as travelers wait in line. Passengers are also scanning their boarding passes—both paper and electronic—rather than exchanging them with TSA officers.

Wash Your Hands: Travelers should wash their hands regularly or use a minimum 60 percent alcohol-based (70 percent isopropyl alcohol) disinfectant before and after using the check-in kiosk, completing the security screening process, and showing your ticket at the gate.

Now, more than ever travelers need to plan for, and be prepared for, contingencies that affect travel. It is important to consider medical and security evacuation services and really understand what they will, and will not, provide. Make sure your health insurance is valid where you will be traveling. It is essential to have timely travel intelligence updates from a professional service. All of this preparation and forethought will enhance your awareness making it easier to avoid inconveniences or pitfalls. You’ll enjoy a better trip.

04 Jun Facts About Federal REAL ID

Facts About Federal REAL ID Driver Licenses and Identification Cards

What is the REAL ID Act?
Beginning October 1, 2021, the federal government will require your driver license or identification card to be REAL ID compliant if you wish to use it as identification to board a domestic fight or enter secure federal facilities that require identification.

Do I Need a REAL ID Driver License or Identification Card?
Starting October 1, 2021, you will need to show a REAL ID driver license or identification card or other federally approved identification (passport, military ID) at TSA airport checkpoints nationwide or to visit secure federal facilities.
NOTE: Check the TSA website for a complete list of approved identification.

You do not need a REAL ID card if:

  • You know you will not be boarding a domestic fight or visiting a secure federal facility, such as a military base.

OR

  • will use other approved documents as identification.

If you don’t choose a REAL ID card, you will receive a federal non-compliant card with the phrase “Federal Limits Apply.” Those under 18 are not required to have a REAL ID card to fly.

What Does a REAL ID Card Look Like?
REAL ID driver license and identification cards have a star in the top right corner.

Check for the star.

REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star at the top of the card. If you’re not sure, contact your state driver’s license agency on how to obtain a REAL ID compliant card.

If I Don’t apply for a REAL ID, Which Card Will I Receive?
You will receive a federal non-compliant driver license or identification card with the phrase “Federal Limits Apply.” Again, Federal requirements go into effect 10/1/2021.

Who is Eligible for a REAL ID Driver License or Identification Card?
U.S. citizens and all legal residents of the United States can apply for a REAL ID driver license or identification card.

If I do not have a REAL ID, can I use a passport for domestic travel?
You’ll need a REAL ID at minimum for domestic travel come October 2021, and your passport can work in place of a REAL ID for domestic travel—but a valid passport will still be required for international travel.

For information by state, including where to obtain a REAL ID, visit the DHS REAL ID website and click your state on the map.

04 Jun The 10 Best Mexico Hotels for Singles

Mexico has its share of romantic luxury resorts that cater to couples in love and also family-friendly resorts geared towards guests of all ages. But when it comes to looking for a hotel where you won’t feel awkward without a significant other, a little digging is required.

Check our out top-10 list which is in no particular order:

To clarify, when we refer to “singles,” we are referring to those travelers who are not married or in a relationship. Singles can include solo travelers, but also girls’ and guys’ getaways. You don’t have to be single to enjoy any of the resorts we mention here, but you also won’t feel awkward if you don’t have someone to hold hands on the beach with.

Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa

This high-end all-inclusive will keep guests entertained with three stylish swimming pools, including a main energy pool, an Xhale pool and an Xcelerate Party Zone pool. At night, travelers can cut a rug at the swanky After Dark nightclub. The hotel also includes an exclusive champagne bar, a giant Jacuzzi for up to 35 people and fire pits around the resort. Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa also offers a lively atmosphere all day and night with special weekly and monthly parties and events, weekly themed parties at different restaurants and an annual DJ program featuring trendsetting artists.

Live Aqua Beach Resort Cancun

Live Aqua Beach Resort Cancun, an adults-only, all-inclusive property, is only 20 minutes away from the Cancun airport, across from La Isla Shopping Village and steps from Luxury Avenue, two popular shopping destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. Singles looking for an intimate setting to meet like-minded travelers should check out the Aqua Club Lounge on the fifth floor of the resort. The Aqua Club Rooms and the 36 suites of the resort have access to this area.

Guests can find information about the area, restaurant information and reservations, car rental information, recreational parks, among other interests. Guests can also enjoy access to a variety of top shelf alcohol and continental breakfast.

Temptation Cancun Resort

This resort caters to free-spirited travelers 21 and over. The topless-optional, all-inclusive resort reopened in August 2017 following an extensive multi-million dollar renovation project.  Temptation’s party and everything-goes atmosphere makes a great fit for single guests. The hotel is also complete with unique entertainment and signature themed parties.

Temptation is designed for guests to interact. Among the wide offering of amenities, the resort has several spaces or “playgrounds” that singles might find particularly appealing. The “Sexy Pool” is a high-energy hotspot at the property. With premium drinks, signature cocktails and day-long entertainment, this is a good spot for guests looking to meet new friends. “Bash,” the hotel’s open-air club, is also a great spot to mix and mingle with other travelers. With resident and guest DJs as well as nightly entertainment, this is the place for singles to be when the sun goes down.

The Cape, a Thompson Hotel

The Cape, a Thompson Hotel is great fit for guests looking for a clean, contemporary hotel. Two pools and a duo of outdoor spa cabanas are available for relaxation, while one of the only rooftop lounges in Cabo San Lucas floats six stories above.

High above Cabo San Lucas, this al fresco “sky garden” pairs sweeping views of the downtown and El Arco areas. Mixologist Nestor Can has created a menu of handcrafted cocktails and local beers. Friends can also rent the bar for private events.

Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya

This hotel is a great fit for the health-oriented traveler, as it offers beach yoga, kayaking, pedal boating, sailing and canoeing. The property’s best rooms for a friends’ retreat are the multi-level Presidential Suite, which has an adjoining double room in addition to two bedrooms within the suites. The property’s rooms are split up in different buildings located in different sections of the resort, and groups can also opt to be in separate rooms in the same building and location (either lagoon side or beach side).

The Presidential Suite has a host of amenities, including a large ground-floor living and dining area with a full kitchen and a private balcony with a whirlpool, a sweeping private terrace overlooking the Caribbean sea, private pool, a separate outdoor dining area with a hammock and walk-in closets.

There are also deluxe experiences that groups can book, including a private dining service with one of the resort’s chefs, who will prepare authentic Mexican meals in-suite. Other offerings at the hotel include private yoga sessions; tequila, craft beer and mezcal tastings; guacamole making; and personal butler service.  Apart from the Presidential Suite amenities, all rooms and suites in Andaz Mayakoba have complimentary minibars, and the suites also have plunge pools.

Live Aqua Boutique Resort Playa del Carmen

Located in the cosmopolitan area of Playa del Carmen, Live Aqua Boutique Hotel Playa del Carmen is in the middle of the world-famous Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), a cobblestone pedestrian street lined with the city’s best restaurants, cafes, bars and boutiques.

The bar at the hotel is conveniently located just steps away from the infinity pool and offers patrons a view of the Caribbean Sea and Cozumel. The bar is modeled after the mansions made famous in the classic mosaics of San Miguel de Allende.    Singles looking for a bite will can check out the hotel’s signature restaurant, where guests can enjoy local cuisine while surrounded by the tropical sights and sounds of the Caribbean. The restaurant also has a really cool mural by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra.

Hotel El Ganzo

This chic resort offers singles a beach club with one of the few swimmable beaches in Los Cabos. The Beach Club has a South Beach, Miami vibe as most of the patrons here usually dress to the nines.  Hotel El Ganzo is also located in close proximity to such hip bars and restaurants as Flora Farms and Acre. Guests who don’t want to leave the resort can take part in fun on-site activities, such as bike rentals, kayaking and yoga classes.

Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort and Spa

One of the best features of this resort is its location, as this high-end all-inclusive resort is situated in the heart of Cabo San Lucas. Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort and Spa is located at the end of the Cabo San Lucas boardwalk, only minutes from the nightlife, fine restaurants and shopping mall.  Also, guests looking to party should check out the exclusive Purple VIP Roof Top Lounge with a premium bar, Jacuzzi tub and local DJ’s spinning at night.

W Punta de Mita

The spot for singles at this hotel is the WET Deck pool area, which includes cabanas and a DJ booth. This is also the spot where guests can indulge in unique creations like alcoholic ice cream.  The Mezcal Lab at the hotel’s Living Room bar and weekly mixers at the Spice Market restaurant are a great way to mingle with other guests.

Another cool feature here is the vintage Chevy truck converted into a beachside ceviche bar. It has about 12 stools for a fun, casual, communal dining experience during the day or at night.  The resort is also located about 25-30 minutes from beach towns with local nightlife, but the hotel can arrange transfers etc. for guests

Thompson Playa del Carmen

Thompson Playa del Carmen is a luxury lifestyle hotel located on the famed La Quinta Avenida. The hotel offers guests two locations – the centrally located, 92-room Main House and the intimate, oceanfront 27-room Beach House, located just a few blocks away.

The oceanfront Beach House opened in February 2016 and has 27 luxury guest rooms and suites, an exclusive pool, private cabanas and an oceanfront restaurant.  The 92-room Main House first debuted in November 2015 and has a 30,000-square-foot rooftop area complete with an infinity pool, ocean views, luxury cabanas and two restaurants.

The Main House is known for its vibrant nightlife, location and luxury accommodations. 02 Jun What is a Travel Designer?

Everybody knows what a Travel Agent is, but when I say “Travel Designer” most people are left scratching their heads and giving me a weird look that says Technically I know what both of those words mean, but I have no idea what you’re talking about. Also, I am hungry.

If I have some food on me I’ll be sure and offer it up, but I’ve always got an answer for “What is a Travel Designer?” Simply put: a Travel Agent will get you where you’re going, but a Travel Designer will not only get you there but make sure you have the time of your life.

Travel is SWELL‘s purpose is to design customized travel and wellness experiences. This is a fancy way of saying, “Tell us what kind of vacation you want and we’ll make it happen.” Travel Designers talk with you, get to know you and your likes and dislikes, and then present to you packages or options that best fit your needs and wants. Because of our connections around the world with hotels, tours, excursion providers, resorts, and so much more, we can get you anywhere in the world you want to go and provide you with a variety of experiences once you get there… experiences you might turn up via research, or you might not. But who wants to do research? The great thing is: we’ve already done all the research for you. And, in the vast majority of cases, we won’t charge you a thing for our services.

What is a Travel Designer (or Travel Advisor)?

A travel designer is a professional travel consultant with the resources, connections and expertise to add great value to your travel plans. Travel designers work in partnership with you to select and plan travel experiences that are tailored to your unique wishes and budget. The benefits of using a travel designer are many, and you may find you uncover new perks each time you work with your travel designer.

In contrast, some travel agencies with large call centers are often inbound marketing specialists with little to no actual travel experience. They are encouraged to sell certain properties and cruise departures. Their goal is speed and volume – that means taking your order and moving on to the next customer as quickly as possible. The disadvantages of using a travel agent is that they may not be able to provide guidance or answer questions about the destinations, cruise lines or properties you are interested in. Many times, due to their marketing partnerships they offer “one-size-fits-all” vacation packages.

Why Should I Use a Travel Designer?

Your time away from home with family or friends is your most precious resource. You want to take advantage of an expert to help you invest it wisely. The very best travel agents, like the travel designers of Travel is Swell (and related sister sites) offer great value that adds a richness of experience to your vacations and getaways. Not only will the experience you have on your vacation be enhanced, the planning will also be a much less stressful and time consuming endeavor for you. Through our status as a preferred partner with virtually every luxury travel provider in the world, we are able to offer our clients preferred rates, amenities, upgrades, VIP status and credits that they cannot access on their own, through the Internet or by booking direct.

All in all, our travel designers personalize travel to fit you, rather than fit you into travel. It’s these changes that really take travel to the next level. As a network of luxury travel designers, we focus on creating a greater experience for you – our esteemed client.  Contact us today.

This is Chris. He has almost three decades of experience in the travel industry and you’d be hard-pressed to find a place he hasn’t been. You can contact him at info@travelisswell.com, or by phone at 1-888-963-8986.

Hurricane-Season

01 Jun Hurricane Safety Tips

A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone or severe tropical storm that forms in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. A typical cyclone is accompanied by thunderstorms, and in the Northern Hemisphere, a counterclockwise circulation of winds near the earth’s surface.

All Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas are subject to hurricanes. Parts of the Southwest United States and the Pacific Coast also experience heavy rains and floods each year from hurricanes spawned off Mexico. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to November, with the peak season from mid-August to late October. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15 and ends November 30.

Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to coastlines and several hundred miles inland. Hurricane can produce winds exceeding 155 miles per hour as well as tornadoes and mircro-bursts. Additionally, hurricanes can create storm surges along the coast and cause extensive damage from heavy rainfall. Floods and flying debris from the excessive winds are often the deadly and destructive results of these weather events. Slow moving hurricanes traveling into mountainous regions tend to produce especially heavy rain. Excessive rain can trigger landslides or mud slides. Flash flooding can occur due to intense rainfall.

Between 1970 and 1999, more people lost their lives from freshwater inland flooding associated with tropical cyclones than from any other weather hazard related to such storms.

Before a Hurricane

  • To prepare for a hurricane, you should take the following measures:
  • Know your surroundings.
  • Learn the elevation level of your property and whether the land is flood-prone. This will help you know how your property will be affected when storm surge or tidal flooding are forecasted.
  • Identify levees and dams in your area and determine whether they pose a hazard to you.
  • Learn community hurricane evacuation routes and how to find higher ground. Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to evacuate.

Make plans to secure your property:

  • Cover all of your home’s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
  • Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage.
  • Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
  • Determine how and where to secure your boat.
  • Install a generator for emergencies.
  • If in a high-rise building, be prepared to take shelter on or below the 10th floor.
  • Consider building a safe room.

Hurricanes cause heavy rains that can cause extensive flood damage in coastal and inland areas. Everyone is at risk and should consider flood insurance protection. Flood insurance is the only way to financially protect your property or business from flood damage. To learn more about your flooding risk and how to protect yourself and your business, visit the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (NFIP) Web site,www.floodsmart.gov or call 1-800-427-2419. For more detailed information on how you can protect your property, view NFIP’s printer-friendly handout Avoiding Hurricane Damage.

During a Hurricane

  • If a hurricane is likely in your area, you should:
  • Listen to the radio or TV for information.
  • Secure your home, close storm shutters and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.
  • Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and
  • keep its doors closed.
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
  • Moor your boat if time permits.
  • Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purpose such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other larger containers with water.

You should evacuate under the following conditions:

  • If you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions.
  • If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure – such shelter are particularly hazardous during hurricane no matter how well fastened to the ground.
  • If you live in a high-rise building – hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.
  • If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an island waterway.
  • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
  • Close all interior doors – secure and brace external doors.
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm – winds will pick up again.
  • Take refuge in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level.
  • Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.
  • Avoid elevators.

After a Hurricane

  • Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio or the local news for the latest updates.
  • Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding even after the hurricane or tropical storm has ended.
  • If you have become separated from your family, use your family communications plan or contact FEMA or the American Red Cross.
  • FEMA has established the National Emergency Family Registry and Locator System (NEFRLS), which has been developed to help reunite families who are separated during a disaster. The NEFRLS system will enable displaced individuals the ability to enter personal information into a website database so that they can be located by others during a disaster.
  • The American Red Cross also maintains a database to help you find family. Contact the local American Red Cross chapter where you are staying for information. Do not contact the chapter in the disaster area.
  • If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe.
  • If you cannot return home and have immediate housing needs. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (example: shelter 12345).
  • For those who have longer-term housing needs, FEMA offers several types of assistance, including services and grants to help people repair their homes and find replacement housing. Apply for assistance or search for information about housing rental resources.
  • Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed¬ out bridges. Stay off the streets. If you must go out watch for fallen objects; downed electrical wires; and weakened walls, bridges, roads, and sidewalks.
  • Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately to the power company.
  • Walk carefully around the outside your home and check for loose power lines, gas leaks and structural damage before entering.
  • Stay out of any building if you smell gas, floodwaters remain around the building or your home was damaged by fire and the authorities have not declared it safe.
  • Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes. If you have any doubts about safety, have your residence inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer before entering.
  • Use battery-powered flashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles. Note: The flashlight should be turned on outside before entering – the battery may produce a spark that could ignite leaking gas, if present.
  • Watch your pets closely and keep them under your direct control. Watch out for wild animals, especially poisonous snakes. Use a stick to poke through debris.
  • Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it’s not contaminated.
  • Check refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out.
  • Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.
  • Use the telephone only for emergency calls.

NEVER use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.

Sandals Resorts International has become the latest travel entity to join the layaway option. Sandals is introducing Layaway & Playaway, a payment plan similar to store layaway options that enable travelers to spread the cost of a trip to Sandals or Beaches vacation over time. There are no fees and no interest payments with the Sandals plan, which can be used at any of the 18 Sandals and Beaches resorts across the Caribbean.

How does it work?

Almost exactly the same as retail stores.  Travelers must make a minimum deposit of $49 per person when booking and then select a payment plan in which the payments can be made in installments – as few as three or as many as 24.  Book with a credit card and Sandals keeps the card on file and charges you automatically every 30 days no matter which plan you choose. Final payment must be paid in full 45 days prior to travel. Please call 1-888-963-8986 to learn more about the Layaway plan offered by Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts.
